The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 1 Oct 1907 Death of Mr. Florence D. O'Sullivan. In our last we chronicled the death, at the ripe old age of 69 years, of Mr. F.D. O'Sullivan of Gilmore, and, as we stated, his demise came most unexpectedly. Deceased was born in 1838 in Bantry County in Cork, Ireland, and left his native country in 1862 for Australia and came direct to Tumut. He then rented a farm up Lacmalac way from a Mr. Robert Gordon (long since deceased) and married his late wife Miss Elizabeth Rebecca Blake, in 1866, and in that year selected first on the Gilmore a block of 100 acres adding little by little to the holding as circumstances would permit, until he acquired an area of 1000 acres, exclusive of special and annual leases. In his younger days, ere blindness hindered, he took a warm interest in matters political and was a devoted stickler to the side he espoused. He was an ardent supporter to his church, a good father to his children, and one most industrious and frugal in business matters. He leaves behind him five sons, viz: -Francis Eugene (Sydney), Alexander Florence (Upper Gilmore), John Sylvester (Gilmore), Daniel Agustine (Sydney) and Edward William (Gilmore), also three daughters, Mrs. Mantel (Lithgow), Mrs. Bolton (New Zealand) and Mrs. T. E. Whatman (Adelong), to mourn their irreparable loss. The funeral took place on Friday last and was numerously attended, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the old cemetery. The coffin was of polished cedar with silver mountings and the undertaking was most ereditably carried out by Mr. James Elphick. The Rev Father O'Dwyer, Vicar General of the Goulburn Diocese, officiated at the grave. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy. |
