| - Notes: FLORENCE GRAHAM nee Vernon
by Margaret Francis and Val Wilkinson Florence Adelaide Vernon was born on 1 April 1881 in Tumut, the eighth child of Frederick and Martha Vernon (nee Bridle). At the age of 14, Florence began keeping a diary. On the first page she wrote the date "Friday 16th August 1895", then recorded a history of her parents' genealogy, and the birth-dates and activities of herself and her brothers and sisters. This reflects her own interests and the fact that she felt the need to record aspects of her family's history. lt is known that several of her cousins also kept diaries recording their families' activities. Florence's diary gives an insight into the activities occupying young girls towards the end of the century and towards the coming of nationhood for Australia. lt reveals that in her family this generation now had the resources to indulge in cultural pursuits or in leisurely social visits to friends or family. lndeed, Flo's father, Frederick Vernon, was the editor of the local newspaper and literary, cultural and community pursuits were greatly encouraged in their family. Flo had a talent for music and in December 1894, together with her eldest sister, Lavinia, passed the Sydney College of Music Examination. During Christmas 1894, Flo spent a fortnight at Talbingo where her Aunt Sarah Lampe lived, then six days at Woodlands, the home of Theo Lampe and Margaret Bridle. ln January 1896, again with Lavinia, Flo passed the lntermediate Division of the Sydney College of Music examinations with Honours. On 26 January 1896 Flowas confirmed by Bishop Chalmers, together with 29 girls and 13 boys. In April of that yeat, a governess was obtained to teach the two younger girls, Flo and Ivy. The timetable reflected the subjects considered necessary for young ladies - English each day, as well as French, painting, drawing, singing and music with performances to the elder children. The governess, Miss Hoffman, left on the 16 July to go to Talbingo to teach cousins Sara and Lena Lampe singing and music. ln 1897 Flo went with her mother to sit for the Senior Honours Division Trinity College of Music exam and received her gold brooch at St. Phillip's school rooms, Church Hill. They stayed a fortnight, boarding at "squires" Redfern, where Flo 'had a great time of it'. ln January 1898, Flo's beloved father, Frederick Vernon died from typhoid fever. From then on the girls divided their time between their brother's and mother's homes. Flo stayed in Tumut where her mother was trying to make a life for those of the family living with her. The entries for February 1898 in Flo's diary record her starting to teach music to six small pupils. By April there were only four members of the family still living al Lorne Cottage, their home in Russell Street - Flo, her mother, brother and sister, Clement and Edith. By October the decision was made to lease their cottage in Tumut, and they moved to Picton. A few days later they went to stay with another brother and sister at Arncliffe. Flo found a "position" as help to a clergyman's wife at Rylstone but only stayed a fortnight as she found the place not to her liking - perhaps she was not used to doing housework! Over the next few years Flo moved around staying with various family members and teaching music. In December 1900 Flo's brother, Ernest, married Mary Elizabeth Graham of Petharton, Picton. Contact between the Vernon and Graham families increased, as Flo was courted by Mary's brother Arthur. Four years later, Flo Vernon was married to Arthur William Adolphus Graham in December 1904 at St Marks' Church of England, Picton. Flo and Arthur, or Art, as he was familiarly called, spent their honeymoon at Bulli then returned to Mascotte, Thirlmere to live on their farm. Flo's first child, Ellen Lavinia Graham, was born in January 1905 followed by Constance Maud in August 1907. Flo took an active part in the running of the farm and delivered produce to Paddy's Market at Picton, carrying baby Connie with her in a basket. 1908 saw a move from Mascotte to Tumut where Art obtained work with his brother- in-law, Clem Vernon. Flo and Art lived at Madden's Corner, now known as Five Ways - the junction of Fitzroy and Broughton Streets and Tumut Plains Road. Flo had the good fortune to have a very caring neighbour, Mrs Davenport, to help her through many a mishap with the children. Living in Tumut meant closeness to other relatives and contact between all the families was common. A few years later Arthur bought land in Tumut in order to build a permanent home for the family. The block stretched from Russell Street to Capper Street, a few doors down from the Sydney Street corner. The modest home, which they called Toorale, was built fronting Capper Street, but grew over the years when more rooms were added as the family increased. Seven more children were born in Tumut - Merle Derriman in August 1909; Kathleen Florence in September 1911; Jean Vernon in December 1913; Vera Moncrieff in June 1915; Beatrice Lillian in August 1917; Eric Vernon in July 1920 and Ronald Moncrieff in March 1923. After seven girls in a row, the birth of a son must have been of great delight to Flo. ln fact she marked the event in her diary by making a simple notation - "son". Flo took an active part in community and church affairs. The children attended the local school where they would have had contact with their cousins from the wider family still living in the district. Fortunately for Flo, many family members still lived in the Campbelltown area when it became necessary to send the children away for tertiary education, so they were able to still be with "family". After Arthur died in 1954, Flo left Tumut to settle in Dee Why with her daughter, Merle. Flo died on 28 February 1966 at the age of 75 years. One of her daughters, Connie, married John French and they stayed in the Tumut district where they raised their own family. |
