George Glasscock He was born 13 March 1895 in Coolac . He enlisted as a Private (Service Number 2904) in the 56th battalion (7th Reinforcements) on the 24 July 1916. At the time of enlistment George was 5’10” 150 lbs. (around 68kg) with grey eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion and occupation was labourer. He was killed the 26th September 1917 in Belgium . As his body is lost he may have been blown up on the battlefield or his grave subsequently blown up. His name is on the Menin Gate for all the 55,000 allied soldiers with no known grave. He left everything (of which there would not have been much) to his sister Emma. He never married.
Probably the battle of Polygon Wood. See Carlyon pages 460-474. 56th Btn was part of the Australian 5th Division which fought for the Wood that day. Allied losses were 15,400 for the day. Australian losses 5,400 of which 3,700 from the 5th Division |
