George Godfrey was born in 1830 and came to Tumut in 1855 to work for John McKinnon at Brungle. After a couple of years there George Godfrey selected property at Gocup and purchased some land from a Mr. Finlay. This land was wet and swampy but through hard work he systematically drained it until it became very prolific land. George Godfrey Snr. had two sons;
>George Godfrey (22“) born 1867, died 1913, >Harry Godfrey was born at Gocup in 1870 and became President of the Tumut Shire Council. He worked the property at Gocup until his death in 1954 at the age of 84 years. and six daughters; >Ann Godfrey (married E. Davis of Parkes), >Elizabeth Godfrey (married Frank Foord of Tumut), >Ame1ia Godfrey (married a Mr. McDonald of Wellington), >Priscilla Godfrey(married W.H. Foord of Bombowlee), >Esther Godfrey (married W. Hayward of Tumut), >Charlotte Godfrey (married GeOrge Gibson). George Godfrey Snr. died in 1910. His wife Charlotte Ann Godfrey died on 28 February 1897 |
