Personal Notes:
Mt De Salis south of Thawa named after him.
Tony's father George was a man of diverse interests who meticulously kept diaries from the age of 18 until his death in 1931 aged 80. He noted heights of local mountains and hills, daily weather conditions and rainfall, gave a summary of his correspondence, commented on his relations, visitors and the neighbours as well as detailing local flora and fauna. George undertook many walking excursions around the countryside and described in full all that he saw. These are truly remarkable and invaluable documents!
George was also an honorary magistrate, dispensed medical and dental aid to those living in the neighbourhood as well as clerical and spiritual assistance when needed. When the Post Office was transferred to Cuppacumbalong he sometimes acted as postmaster. His grandson Bill remembers peeping from behind a bush watching 'Uppa' pull a tooth from shearer Mick McMahon.

From SMH 4 Jan 1932 " LATE MR. G. F. DE SALIS.
The death occurred last week of Mr. G. F. De Salis, pastoralist and former M.L.A., who was a member of a well-known pioneering family."

SMH Article 11 Mar 1924
OLDEST JUSTICE.
LICENSING BENCH. MR. G. F. DE SALIS.

Mr. George Fane de Sails, of Michelago, whose appointment as a Justice of the Peace dates back to 1882, when the Licensing Act was introduced, is claimed to be the oldest honorary justice engaged on the Licensing Bench in the State.

The Licensing Act passed by the last ses- sion of Parliament replaces that of 1882 in the composition of the Courts officiating in country districts. The old Act provided that the Licensing Bench should comprise a police magistrate and two honorary magistrates duly appointed for each licensing district. The new law, which comes into force next July, abolishes the positions of honorary magistrates, substituting for them a Bench of three police magistrates. Among the hon- orary magistrates to be displaced is Mr. de Salis, of Michelago.

At a recent meeting of the Queanbeyan Licensing Court Mr. de Salis was warmly eulogised by the police magistrate (Mr. M. H. Cleeve), and also by visiting counsel, for his long service to the State, and for the high civic spirit shown by him in this and other public positions.

The De Salis family had played an im- portant part in the pastoral and political af- fairs of this State. Mr. Leopold Fane De Salis came to Australia in 1810. The ?? following he bought Darbalara Station, near Gundagai, since made famous for its milking shorthorns. Here he started sheep-farming, being one of the first in the eastern Riverina to grasp the possibilities of sheep in prefer- ence to cattle. In 1844 he took up the then unoccupied run of Junee, locating his home- stead close by the site of what is now the busy town of that name. The Junee run was not well provided with water to tide over dry spells, and Mr. De Sails constructed a number of dams, this method of water conservation being looked upon as something quite novel in the colony at that time. In 1856 he purchased Cuppacumbalong Station, on the Murrumbid- gee, country which is now included in the Federal Capital territory. Here he resided until the end of his days, filling a busy life with politics and many public duties, besides adding to the wealth of the country by grow- ing a fine type of merino wool and breeding draught and blood horses. After representing Queanbeyan in the Lower House for some years, Mr. Leopold Fane De Sails in 1874 was appointed to the Legislative Council, in which he took a prominent part right up to within a few years of his death in 1898.

Mr. George Fane De Sails, the third eldest son, was born while his parents were residing at Darbalara. He was educated privately. Practically the whole of his adult life has been spent on the land, first, at Cuppacumbalong, and later at his present property, Soglio, near Michelago. Not only has he been associated for sixty odd years with country which is now portion of the Capital Territory, but his con- nection with Canberra was still further accentuated by his marriage to a daughter of the late Rev, Canon Smith, who was rector in charge of the historic St. John the Baptist Church at Canberra for nearly fifty years, the Canon's induction dating back to 1855. Canon Smith was a man of wonderful energy, with a parish spreading from Yass to Goulburn, and across to Tumut, and his name to-day is revered by the older folk throughout the whole country side. Mr. George De Sails fol- lowed In the political footsteps of his father by representing Queanbeyan in the Legisla- tive Assembly for one term in the early eighties. His brother William, who now re- sides in England, also occupied a seat for some years, making the third in the one family to be returned for the same constituency of Queanbeyan.

Another member of this Interesting family is Mrs. Nina Farrer, of Lambrigg, on the Murrumbidgee, below Cuppacumbalong. It was on Lambrigg that her husband, the late Mr. William Farrer, worked for so many year upon the experiments which eventually gave to Australia the several wheats which have doubled our wheat-growing areas, and have added millions to the riches of the Commonwealth.
