Boer War Record
Bent, James Bernard Lowe (365) Sergeant, C Squadron. Farmer from Grong Grong station, Wagga Wagga. Born Boree Creek, near Wagga Wagga, 1862. Parents: Father: John (Jack) Beecher Bent (d. 1897). Mother: Emma Rome (d.1900) who had 7 sons and 1 daughter (1862-93). Religion: Roman Catholic. Militia service with 2nd Infantry Regt. Volunteered for South Africa. Left Sydney per s.s Southern Cross, 17/1/1900 and disembarked Capetown, 19/2/1900. Sergeant, 1/8/1900. Remained in Capetown 30/3/1901 in expectation of a commission. Later Lieutenant (supernumerary) to 3NSWMR, 30/3/1901. Promoted Captain. Awarded QSA and 5 clasps: Drie/Jhb/DH/Witt/CC. Awarded KSA and two clasps. RTA c. December 1902. Became Manager of Spring Valley Station, Germanton (later Holbrook) till 1929. Retired to Wagga Wagga. Married Mary Ann Ryan in Germanton, 30/4/1906. Had 2 sons and 1 daughter (1906-10). Died Wagga, 22/1/1940, aged 78. Buried Wagga. Remembered on the Wagga Wagga Memorial in the Victory Memorial Gardens. |
