The Tumut and Adelong Times 20 Dec 1927
DEATH OF MR JAMES MURRAY. Death claimed another of Tumut's hardy old pioneers last Sunday week, in the person of Mr James Murray, who for the last few years has been residing with his son Joe at Jindalee. Not long ago he was an inmate of the Cootamundra District Hospital, with heart and kidney affection. But prior to that he had enjoyed remarkably good and regular health. His death took place in 'The Retreat' Hospital, Cootamundra. The remains were brought to Tumut on Tuesday for interment, being laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of the Old Cemetery, Rev. Fr. Sharkey, P.P., officiating. His wife predeceased him many years ago. The surviving children are : Sons, Michael, John and William (Tumut), Joseph (Jindalee), Peter (Barmedman) ; daughters, Mrs. Jas. O'Keefe (Gundagai), Mrs. Walter Naughton (Sydney), Mrs. Jno. Truloar (Sydney) and Mrs. Thos. Walsh (Tumut) . Mrs. Truloar, Mrs. Walsh and Joe were triplets. The late Mr. Murray was a genial old soul, and dearly loved to have his jokes amongst his friends. He came to this country from County Care, Ireland, and in 1870 married Miss Katherine Kelly, a daughter of the late Peter Kelly, of Bombowlee. He was always Connected with farming pursuits. Three of the family predeceased him, viz, Mary and Jim, the other member, Stanley, being killed in the Great War. The cofflnbearers were three sons (John, Michael and Joe), grandson (Gilbert), son-in-law (Mr. Thos. Walsh), and nephew (Mr. Thos. McGratli). Mrs. Bridget Mc Grath (who died at Adelong 10 months ago, at the age of 98 years) was a step-sister. Deceased came from a family with a record for longevity, his mother dying at the age of 104 years in Tumut 32 years ago. |
