Personal Notes: |
On 15th June 1863, James Pratt selected 320 acres called "College" Farm at Old Junee along the Temora Road. Grew first wheat crop in district. In 1865 James married Catherine O'Donnell, sister of his friend, John O'Donnell. They lived at "College Farm". In 1867 James erected a store at "College Farm" to gain custom from Gold Miners on their way from Victoria to the Grenfell Rush. Also, in 1868 gold was discovered at Junee Reefs and Sebastapol. In 1869 James erected a butcher's/baker's and general store at the Junee Reefs diggings. He also became a licensed auctioneer and mining share broker. He also sold water from "CollegeFarm" in this very dry year. In 1870 he sold his businesses and erected "The Gate" Hotel at "College Farm". In 1874, James's wife, Catherine, died during the birth of their 7th child. The child also died. He sold up and moved with his five surviving children to the "New Caledonian Hotel" at Cartwright's Hill and his mother helped look after the children until he remarried.
In 1874 James Pratt moved to "New Caledonian" Hotel at Cartwright's Hill where his mother helped with the children. Here he met Ann Harding, his second wife. In 1875 he selected 320 acres on the North Junee Run, built a dwelling there and took Ann and children there. In 1876 he selected 566 acres along the Old Sydney Road, Ivor District, built a Cobb & Co Changing Station and Public House, sold the earlier selection and moved there. When his mother died in 1877, he sold up at Ivor and selected acres on the South Junee Run. In 1880 he became an agent for principal brewer of Wagga Wagga, to cater for needs of railway workers and miners camped around. When his father died in 1881, he sold his selection and moved to the "Caledonian Hotel", became licensee, also ran butcher's shop and cultivated vegetables. In 1887 he moved to Wallacetown to manage Cobb & Co Changing station there; he also became race-course steward for Wallacetown race course, bred draught horses etc. In 1901 he wrote a History of the Junee region 1845 to 1880 - published. |
