Personal Notes: |
John and Hannah Miles were pioneers of the Book Book and Ladysmith area. He had lived in the district since 1865, and Hannah came in 1875 when they married. John worked as a carrier, mainly taking loads to the Woollen Mills in Albury. He had a secret cavity in the wagon shaft to safeguard money, useful when he met Dan Morgan in the bush. He was well-known for his honesty. When the banks were in trouble in the 1890s he collected money on behalf of his neighbours. Their large family of children were amongst the first pupils at the Ladysmith school. Later he had a selection at Gregadoo. In 1888 they sold their farm and went to Ada Vale which was virgin bush then. After John's death, Hannah moved to Morundah Street Wagga Wagga. She was an accomplished horsewoman.
John Miles arrived in the Wagga Wagga area in early 1860s, according to the Union Bank Ledgers, dated 1881, in the area the past 16 years, local newspaper 1872 - he had his horse stolen from him. He had a farm at Ladysmith, a Selection at Gregadoo in 1888. He sold both farms and went to Ade Vale farm, with Book Book Station on one side and Big Springs Station on the other side. |
