John and Heather's first child Jean was born at Gundagai on 22 Oct 1925. In that year John Logie Baird transmitted recognisable human features by television, a huge technological leap; F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby; Hitler reorganised the Nazi Party and published Vol I of Mein Kampf
After originally having correspondence lessons at home, Jean's first taste of formal education was the tiny one-teacher Bengarralong school. With her cousin Betty Elworthy she went as a weekly boarder to high school in Tumut and later toBrighton College, Manly. Jean had to 'adopt' the name Craig when she began her nurse training at Prince Alfred Hospital in 1942 as her cousin Betty Elworthy was already enrolled under that name. Jean did her midwifery training at King George V in Sydney and also nursed for some time in New Zealand. Whilst nursing at Merriwa, Jean met Roy Hereward called Ward ARGUE. Ward and Jean were married at St John's, Gundagai with the reception in the garden of Braemar. For three years they lived at Pembroke, Merriwa and whilst there Lesley and Robert were born. Ward was manager of a sheep property at Whittlesea in Victoria before they returned to Gundagai and purchased Braemar from the family. In 1964 they extended the home and in 1968 added a granny flat for Ward's mother who lived there until her death in 1970. Further extensions were made when Rob and family returned to make their home at Braemar. Ward grew lucerne and fattened lambs, then in the late 1980s changed to breeding Black Angus cattle. He began flying and obtained a private licence, totalling about 700 hours over SA, Victoria, NSW and South Queensland. For six years he was president of the Tumut Flying Club. Keen on golf and gardening, Jean was an ardent supporter of the Anglican Spring Flower Show and Gundagai Flower Show and took an active role in the P & C Association and Red Cross. In 1971 she went back to nursing at Gundagai Hospital on a temporary basis. Very popular with patients and staff, Jean became a full-time sister from 1975, staying until ill-health forced her retirement following a partial mastectomy. Sadly, in 1991 Jean also developed lung cancer. She died on 18 June 1992 and is buried among many of her ancestors in Gundagai Cemetery. The extent of her popularity is summed up in her obituary in the Gundagai Independent four days later ... "Jean Argue will be remembered with deep affection in the Gundagai community. There will always be a particular place for her in the hearts of those whom she nursed while on the staff of Gundagai Hospital. Jean showed a great compassion, kindness and gentleness in her profession - and they were hallmarks of her life at work, in the family, and in her direct interest in the wider community." |
