Personal Notes:
Named for his grandfather and uncle, the last of the family was Arthur James but known to his siblings and friends as James who arrived at the Tara Private Hospital, Gundagai on 16 Aug 1933. This was a dismal and frightening year and an indication of things to come - Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany with dictatorial powers; a mass exodus of authors, musicians, actors and painters began from Germany; starvation in the USSR reached disastrous proportions - and Japan withdrew from the League of Nations.
The little school at Bengarralong provided young James with his first taste of education - he then boarded in the town whilst at Gundagai Primary and Junior High Schools. In 1948 he went to Newington College at Stanmore where he played cricket and football and was eventually Senior Boarder Prefect. James also did a wool-elassing course at Gundagai Tech, and National Service in June 1954.
Known in those days as "Cookie" to sports followers, he was a keen cricketer and ardent rugby league player. He was in the team which won the reserve grade premiership in 1956 and was also a bearer of the Olympic torch on its way to Melbourne. In 1962 and 1963 he was part of Gundagai Maher Cup Competition team. He has maintained a lifelong interest in the game and in 1992 was appointed
to the Gundagai selection panel.
"Cookie' Elworthy had an illustrious football career with Gundagai and was a member of Peter Diversi's team which lifted the famed Maher Cup from the grasp of the highly regarded Wyalong team led by the late Darrell Fazio", proudly reported the Gundagai Independent. Both his sons inherited his ability.
Like his brother Rob, James also found love at Gundagai Hospital! Rosemary Heather, only child of Heather nee MARKHAM and Douglas Macquarie CARMICHAEL was born at Cremorne. She attended SCEGGS, Darlinghurst from kinder to leaving, then worked in the Bank of NSW for a year doing typing, shorthand and ledger work.
Anursing career seemed more to her liking so Rosemary trained at Royal North Shore Hospital, did midwifery/obstetrics at Sydney'S Crown Street Hospital, gained her third certificate in welfare of mothers and babies - then went to Gundagai.
James and Rosemary were married at St James Church, King Street, Sydney on 21 ApI 1965 with a reception at the Hotel Australia. The happy occasion was marred by the collapse after the reception of 'Unk' - Jim Elworthy Snr who was taken to the Poplars Hospital at Epping where his niece Nan Mackenzie was nursing. He died there on 01 May 1965.
For the next 18 months James' mother Vi (or VJ as she was by now mostly called by her children) stayed on at Burrenderry whilst James ran the property, since 1957 a proprietary limited company. Under his Uncle Jim's tuition he had become proficient as a farmer and grazier and later was able to buyout the other shareholders. Rosemary added to the family landholding when she purchased nearby Rosevale.
