OBITUARY
WIDOW OF THE LATE MATT. SAWYER. The region of old friends in this district and throughout the State will regret the passing, on December 28, at the Scottish Hospital, Sydney, of Mrs. Jessie Frederlca Pauline Sawyer, OBE, widow of the late Matthew Sawyer of Eulomo, Bethungra and mother of Malcolm (deceased), Allan (deceased). Marie Inglls, Wallace Sawyer, and Helen Hinder. Mr Sawyer died on February 12, 1911, aged 76. Mrs. Sawyer was first president of the Cootamundra branch of the C.W.A., and the State president from 1928 to 1938. In 1934 she received the OBE in recognition of her ardent devotion to the work of the C.W.A. During her presidency she introduced the 'Use More Wool' campaign, for which the C.W.A. organised exhibitions throughout the State. From that campaign the present State handicrafts committee of the C.W.A. began. Mrs. Sawyer was keenly Interested in the provision of maternity services for countrywomen. The Flying Doctor service benefited by an appeal Mrs. Sawyer made through the C.W.A. She was also responsible for the C.W.A cookery book, which has sold 75,000. copies in all parts of the world. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer linked two old families of the Bethurgra district. The former was a son of the late Matt. Sawyer, Senr. founder of 'Eulomo'. Mrs. Sawyer was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Beveridge, of 'Dollar Vale'. On Monday, at St. Stephen's Sydney a service was conducted by the Rev. Alan Tory, and the remains were brought to Cootamundra for interment beside those of her husband, following a.service In the Anglican Church, on Wednesday morning, where there was a large gathering, particularly representative of the descendants of district pioneers and of the C.W.A. Many motored long distances to be there and the array of wreaths from Sydney and all parts of the state, and from Cootamundra and district gardens, was one of the largest seen in Christ Church. The Rector (Rev. A. W. Harris) referred to the tributes already made to Mrs. Sawyer's various activities, and went on to make references to her hospitality at 'Eulomo,' and the help she had always given to community affair at Bethungra, with most of which she was prominently associated. The ample evidence of her good work here and all over New South Wales was such as to deserve thanks and appreciation. This was a consolation to those who mourned, and for whom he added deep sympathy. At the service the Hume Group President of the C.W.A., Mrs. Frank Davidson, represented Mrs. Mac Smith, the National President of the C.W,A.A. Country Women's Association of Australia, and also represented Mrs. Les.Brooks, the N.S.W. President of the C.W.A. whilst Mrs. W. Hutchinson was there as president of the Cootamundra branch accompanied by five of it's members, Mesdames' McCllntock, sen., S, Williams, E. Hicks, V. Conkey and A. Donaldson.
