Personal Notes: |
Keith was born the middle child of the family of three sons of Harry and Eliza and was brought up at the Andison family home at Northgate in Brisbane. He received his primary education at Virginia State School, and his secondary at Brisbane Boys Grammar School.
Early in 1935, whilst awaiting an appointment to the Queensland Public Service, he worked one month in the Accounts Section ofthe Australian General Electric Company in Brisbane. Keith's appointment to the Public Service Commissioner's Department in Brisbane followed and four years later he decided a change was needed and accepted a position with the Brisbane office of the wool broking company, Winchcombe Carson Ltd. This company in addition to wool, sold livestock, grazing and farming properties, machinery, rural products, insurance, etc. and also provided rural finance to its clients. After about six months Keith was transferred to the Charleville Branch, then to Cunnamulla and St George. World War 2 intervened and Keith joined the Army in 1942. After training he served in the Intelligence Section of the 30th Battalion (AlF), seeing active service in New Guinea in several operational areas. In September 1945, at the end of hostilities, he, with several thousand other servicemen, witnessed the signing of the surrender by the Japanese in New Guinea on the Wewak Airstrip. This was followed by further service at Rabaul, New Britain, from where the Japanese Army was gradually returned to Japan as shipping became available. The Australian Army was gradually reduced to peacetime requirements and in May 1946, Sergeant KF Andison returned to Australia and was discharged from the Army at Redbank, Brisbane in June. In July he resumed civilian employment with Winchcombe Carson Ltd at St George. In July 1951 he was transferred to the company's Miles Branch, to Longreach in September 1952 and was appointed Manager at Emerald in November 1953. This was followed by an appointment as Manager at Goondiwindi in January 1956 and a transfer to Brisbane in January 1967 as Branch Finance Manager. Keith retired in September 1980 as Area Finance Supervisor in the, by then, merged company Dalgety Winchcombes, 41 years after joining Winchcombe Carson Ltd, concluding a very interesting and enjoyable working life in the Pastoral and Agricultural life of Queensland. Keith's sporting interests included playing cricket and tennis and, whilst in St George after the war, he was also active in Tennis administration, being an organiser of the South Western Queensland Tennis Championships and the Balonne Tennis Championships. He also actively participated in various community organisations wherever he lived, including Junior Chamber of Commerce, Ambulance Committee, Rotary and various Church Committees. Keith met Jill Spanton in 1956 when he transferred to Goondiwindi and they were married in September 1959. Their three children were born in Goondiwindi. When Keith was transferred from Goondiwindi to Brisbane in 1967, they purchased a home at Chermside West, where they still reside. During retirement Keith became interested in Family History and researched and recorded details of the families of both his parents, Andison and Francis, and assisted other Francis relatives in organising several Francis Family Reunions which commenced in 1984. |
