MR JOHN J McKEY
By the recent death at the Tumut District Hospital of Mr. John Joseph McKey of West Blowering, the Tumut district lost one of its fast vanishing band of pioneers. The late Mr. McKey, who was born at Ennis, County Clare, Ireland on October 19, 1853, received his early education from the Christian Brothers and after the death of his father came out to Australia, at the' age of 13, with his mother and two sisters. His elder brother, Patrick, who died in Queensland on New Year's Day, 1939, at the age of 95, had come out some time before. At the age of 24, Mr. McKey married Miss Catherine Higgins, of Yellowin, who predeceased him about seven years ago. Of their family of ten, one died in infancy, one son (Francis) was drowned in the Tumut River at the age of 15, and another (Mr. John McKey, of Goulburn) died about ten years ago. The surviving members of the family are Henry (Griffith), Margaret (Mrs. John Millay, of Lane Cove), Harriet (Mrs. D. Beattie, of Gilmore), May (Mrs. Jas. Millay, of Kensington), Jas. Patrick (Esk, Queensland), Catherine (Sister Gabriel Mary, St. Joseph's Convent, North Goulburn) and Kevin (West Blowering). Mr. McKey is also survived by thirty-one grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. Besides his daughter, Sister Gabriel Mary, one grand daughter is Sister M. Paschal, of St. Joseph's Convent, Goulburn, and four others are Sisters M. Placide, M. Hyacinth, M. Alacoque and Maureen, of the Convent of Mercy, Monte Saint Angelo, North Sydney. Rev. Fr. Plaqid, C.P., Mary's Mount, Goulburn, is a grandson, Rev. Fr. Jos, McKey (Queensland) is a nephew, and another grandson, Mr. John Milllay, is a Passionist student.

- Notes: John Joseph McKey arrived in Australia from Ireland with his mother, Margaret McKey, in 1867. His brother (Patrick McKey) and sister (Mary McKey) had arrived a few years earlier in 1860.

Mary McKey was married to George Spice at Kiandra in 1864, and John McKey went to the Kiandra diggings to stay with her. He later purchased a property at West Blowering.

In 1877 John Joseph McKey married Catherine Higgins, a daughter of Patrick Higgins, who also settled on West Blowering in 1860. Their children, all born on the farm, were;
