Personal Notes: |
MARIA TRAFALGAR BOURNE was christened in St Phillips Church, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, on 22nd November, 1839 (IGI Records). The date, 21st October, 1842 is recorded as her birth date on a cross stitch sampler she did when she was 8 years old!.
Why was she given the name Trafalgar? The Navy battle, The Battle of Trafalgar, which the British won, was in 1805, some years before. She came to Australia with her family in 1851. (Her death certificate of 1874 states that she lived in Australia for 12 years – rather she was married for 12 years!). She married George Barnard, formerly of Lea, in Kent, but then of ‘Trelasdee’ near Rockhampton in Queensland, on 22nd May, 1862 in the house of Mr Alhecht Feez Esq., in Rockhampton according to the rites of the Church of England. As her father Thomas had died in 1852, her mother ‘gave her away’. The wedding was probably kept simple because of lack of funds since her father’s ill health and death and her mother’s burden of raising the family alone. Sometime after the birth of their first child, daughter May in 1863 and son George Walter in 1864, and following the death of George’s father George William of ‘Landfall’ in Tasmania in 1864, George and Maria travelled to Tasmania where their second son, Charles Ashmall, was born in 1867. The family later moved back to Rockhampton. See details of their life. They had six children, Maria, George Walter, Charles Ashmall, Henry Greensill, Wilfred Bourne and Mabel Theodora, and a stillborn baby. Maria died at Fitzroy Street, Rockhampton, Queensland, on 3rd February, 1874, aged 33, 2 months after the birth of a stillborn child. The cause of death was recorded as ‘remittent fever’. She is buried in the Gladstone Road Cemetery, Rockhampton. Her sister, Sarah (Aunt Sis as the family called her), came to look after the children and married George in 1879. On her death certificate, Maria’s mother’s maiden name is given as Ashmeer. This is incorrect, it should be Ashmall, as her son Charles was given the second name of Ashmall and her mother’s marriage registration shows the name as Ashmall. There is a silver plated fork which belonged to the Barnards and was probably a wedding present for Maria and George. There is also a copy of “Longfellows Poetical Works” which belonged to Maria. |
