- Notes: The eldest child Mary 1789, never married but was a well-qualified
dressmaker/ milliner with business premises at 39 High Street, a central area of the
city opposite the Guildhall. The business later traded as M & A Bowcher. Her
partner was probably Ann, wife or widow of Mary's uncle, Henry Bowcher.
One of Mary's advertisements from the Exeter Flying Post of 16 May 1822 invites
friends and the public to inspect a genteel and fashionable assortment of dresses,
millinery, etc from London'. The business obviously flourished as in May the
following year they were advertising their Fashions, Millinery and Dress Rooms and
were also looking for an apprentice.
A notice of Mary's death from consumption on 24 Jun 1827 appeared in the
Flying Post of 05 July but trading continued after her death. Advertisements were
more fulsome than we are used to but this one from the 18 May 1830 Flying Post is
well worth repeating in full ...
"Mrs Bowcher informs the Nobility, Gentry, her friends & the public that she has
taken eligible rooms immediately over Mr Whipple, Ironmonger, 232 High Street,
where she intends carrying on the business of Milliner, Dressmaker, etc and hopes
by unremitting attention, to merit their patronage and support. Mrs B (sic) has
selected, during the past week, the NEWEST and RICHEST ASSORTMENT of
MILLINERY, DRESSES, PELISSES, etc which she trusts are well worth the
inspection of those ladies who may honour her with a call. Her ROOMS will be
open on MONDAY 17th inst."
