Mary was born about 1838, however, I have found a baptism for 11/12/1836 at Surfleet, where her siblings were baptised. She was 22 when married to Charles Evennet in 1860. 1841 Census shows Mary aged 5, & 1851 she is 13. Found 2/4/2009 shipping record for Mary Merriman to Australia. N.S.W. Assisted Immigrant Shipping records states the following:- Mary Merriman aged 21 born abt 1837, Housemaid from Spalding, Lincoln, arrived in Botany Bay, N.S.W. 27 February 1858 from Plymouth, U.K. on the ship 'STEBONHEATH'. Her father was Simon still living, & her mother Mary was deceased. Mary was C/E & could read. The Sydney Morning Herald 1/3/1858 details an inquest held into the death of Ann Cox, & the poor treatment handed out to the single girls by the matron. The single girls were taken in a carriage to Hyde Park on embarkation. The Stebonheath was struck by a hurricane in the Bay of Biscay on its long voyage to Australia.
