DEATHS.
It is with deep regret we have to record the death, at the ripe old age of 80 years, of Mrs. Robert Lowther, relict of the late Robert Lowther (one of the oldest pioneers of the Tumut district, who arrived here about 60 years ago and married the deceased, the widow of Mr. Wallace, who was the father of Mrs. Samuel Piper). With her second husband, Mr. R. Lowther, she endured the trials, troubles and privations incidental to back country life at a time when the dusky citizens of the soil were numerous and troublesome. Her husband and herself started, station life at Toomorroma; thence they went to Shaking Bog which they secured as a run. They had there a mob of 200 horses and a herd of 1200 head of cattle, and Mr.James Smiles (long since departed)
bought an interest in the concern ; for £1000. Afterwards Mr. Lowther came to Bombowlee Creek and selected largely at the time of the Kianda rush, residing then on the property since purchased by Mr. C. Blackman, the balance being held by his eldest son Mr. William Lowther.
Upon Mr. R. Lowther's demise, his property was sold and divided between his beneficiaries and the deceased. Mrs. Lowther continued to occupy the comfortable home in which she died on Saturday at 9 p.m. She died peacefully from senile decay, being sensible to the end, inquiring at the last of the many relatives she was to leave for ever. The deceased lady was a kindly old soul, and a favorite with those who knew her. She leaves behind her five sons (Messrs. W. Lowther of Bombowlee Creek, John Charles and Harry of the same place, Mr. Robt.Lowther of Monaro, and Mr. Jas.Lowther, Red Hill Station), and five daughters (Mrs. Samuel Piper of Bombowlee Creek, Mrs. Robt. Piper of Bombowlee, Mrs. Jas. Kell, Lacmalac, and Misses Hannah and Lizzie, the latter one of our fearless horseriders, to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. The
funeral took place on Monday last and was numerously attended. Mr. W. Himsworth was the undertaker, and Rev. T. E. Owens-Mell officiated at the grave. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy.
