Gone to Rest.
On Monday morning last, we regret to state, that ancient and respected pioneer, Mrs. H. Hoad, sen., passed away to her last resting place, after following up the journey of life for the extended period of 85 years, and death came in the mildest form possible, the deceased remaining con-scious right up to the last. She had been residing with her daughter, Mrs J. T. Butler, of Gilmore, for past three years, and was particularly free from illness for the whole of her long life, never having had to consult a doctor until six weeks ago, and prescription given seemed to quite restore her to her usual state of health. Three days prior to her death however, she became so enfeebled that she had to take to her bed, but nothing serious was apprehended. She conversed with members of the household, and within five minutes of her end the son asked her how she felt, getting a clear answer that she was pretty bad, then seemed to pass peacefully away. De -ceased was possessed of a wonderful constitution, being particularly active for her time of life. She was quiet and unobtrusive in her manner of living, winning respect from everyone who knew her, and was never known to speak ill of or do a bad turn to a neighbour. Her birthplace was Lewis, in the old country, and she immigrated to Australia with her parents in the ship Amelia Thomson in the year 1838. Her first schooling was at Parramatta, and afterwards she be-came employed at Government House, during Governor Sir Charles Fitzroy's time. On Feb. 24th, 1854, she was married to her late husband, Mr. Henry Hoad, who predeceased her by many years. They left Sydney by horse and dray to travel to Tumut, arriving here on 24th May, 1854, and were fortunate in being able to obtain the block or fine land at Bombowlee, on which a large family was born and reared by them, their names being, in order of ages, — Mrs J. Nuttall, Mrs. A. Potter, Mr. Geo. Hoad, Mrs T. Campbell, Mrs J. T. Butler, Mrs E. Denny (West Australia), Mrs J. Dowell, Mr John Hoad, (Tamworth), Mrs H. Manns, Mr Wm. Hoad (West Australia) and Mrs J. Percival (Adelong). Two girls pre-deceased the parents, Susan and Mary, making up a family of 13 children ; there are also 58 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Tuesday afternoon last, the internment being in the Anglican portion of the old cemetery, alongside the remains of her late husband. Rev. Burgess, who conducted the burial service, made feeling reference to the life of the old lady and spoke words of condolence to the family and relatives. The undertaker's responsibilities were faithfully attended to by Mr. J. Elphick.
