| Personal Notes: |
|
When Mary Ann died, local school children failed to attend the Browns Camp school for a week, the school teacher, Benjamin Denning, writing to the Education Dept; "I have to report the non-attendance of pupils at the above school for the week ending 10th Inst on account of the death of Mrs Clifford. In explanation, I beg to state that there are only seven children now attending the school and they are all very near relatives of the deceased lady. The death took place on Sunday 5th Instant." Mr Denning called on parents but they were all adamant that their children would not attend school that week. He also tried to get the school together at Corrowong in the latter part of the week, but failed, noting, ".....many of of the pupils live a considerable distance from the school - staying with their friends in the vicinity of the school during the week school is held here and returning to their homes at the end of each school week."
Inscription Mary Ann Clifford, relict of James, died 5 October 1890 aged 51 years; also Christina Rich, second daughter of above, died 2 May 1891 aged 32 years. |
