CROYDON. December 25.
Mr. Henry Rowse, the manager of Ben-
nion's Block, fell down a shaft yesterday
morning. He was engaged in fitting in a
fresh column in the pump when the ladder
gave way and he fell a distance of 60 ft.,
when the ladder stuck in the shaft. Mr.
Rowse's body hit the top of the ladder,
which entered the body and held it fast till
a rescue party of miners descended. The
injured man was brought to the surface,
but died shortly after his admittance to
the Hospital.

The news of the death at Golden
Gate on Monday evening last of Mr
James Whybrow (says the Croydon "Mining News") came as a surprise to
his Croydon friends, as although it was known he was not in good health still
he was not thought to be seriously ill.
He was only ill three days suffering from an attack of pneumonia.

A very old resident of the field, Mr.
James Whybrow, aged 74 years, died, at
Golden Gate yesterday (our Croydon
correspondent wired on November 17). He
was only ill three days. He was a
stationer and storekeeper, and leaves a
widow and four married daughters.

died, in the Normanton Hospital on
Wednesday afternoon. She came to
Croydon in the early days of the gold
field's history. Six years ago she went
to reside in Cairns, but has recently
been living with one of her daughters
in Normanton.

The death has occurred in Mackay
after an illness extending over two
years of Mrs. Annie Maria Rowse, re-
lict of the late Harry Rowse, mine
manager, who was accidentally killed
at Benmon's Block, Croydon, in 1906.
The deceased was in her 75th. year,
of a quiet disposition she made many
friends. The couple were married
in 1889 at Georgetown and lived in
the Gulf country until 1906, when Mrs.
Rowse and family made their home
at Chillagoe. In 1912 they moved to
Townsville. After some years the de-
ceased lady moved to Picnic Bay,
where she was hostess at Hotel Mag-
netic until 1935. Her old friends at
Picnic Bay were very dear to her.
For some time she made her home
again in Townsville, and then moved
to Mackay. She was privately laid
to rest in Mackay cemetery, the Rev.
E. Potter, Methodist Church, officiat-
ing at the burial. All seven children
survived mourn the loss of a won-
derful mother. They are: Harry
Rowse, Picnic Bay; Mrs. H. Notting-
ham, Townsville; Mrs. E. A. Quinn,
Mackay; Mrs. C. L. Hayles, Cairns;
Mrs. J. L. Wells, Lithgow; Mrs. D. E.
O'Donnell, Brisbane, and Ben, West
End, Townsville. There are also
eleven grand children and three sis-
ters, Mrs. F. Jenkins, Townsville, Mrs.
E. McPherson, Bouldercombe, and
Mrs. G. Roberts, Mareeba.
