Kyneton Guardian 1 March 1917
A WORTHY PIONEER:
Mrs Margaret Latham, wife of Mr Samuel Latham, died at her residence, South Kyneton, at 5.45. 0n Monday evening after an illness of about three months. Death was due to an internal ailment.
Mrs Latham was 61 years of age; and was a native of County Leitrim, Ireland, being a daughter of the late Mr Michael McHugh, of that place. She came to Victoria 35 years ago and shortly after her arrival was married to Mr Latham in St. Mary's, Kyneton by the late Very Rev. Dean Geoghegan. They resided in this district ever since, Mr Latham being engaged in farming pursuits during the whole time.
Mrs. Latham was of a cheerful and benevolent disposition, and there are many in the Kyneton district who have benefited by her generosity . Travellers and strangers, too, were never allowed to leave her door without being asked to partake of a meal or other hospitality. Mrs Latham was deservedly respected and has left many friends and no enemies.
She is survived by her husband, two sons and three daughters. Both the sons (James and Charles) are at present on active service at the war. The daughters are Mrs Robert Muldowney of Gippsland and Misses Margaret and Sarah Latham who reside with their father. Mrs. Latham is also survived by one brother and two sisters. The brother, (Michael) is in Ireland. The sisters are Mrs R. Jones of Mill street, Kyneton and Mrs J. .Murphy of Rochester.
The funeral look place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. The place of interment was the Kyneton Cemetery. The coffin bearers were Messrs J. Keegan. A. Duff, E. Bourke and Ryan. Rev. Father O'Connor officiated at the grave. Mr J. Cuddihy was the undertaker.
