OBITUARY.
MRS, AGNES FTZALAN.
The death took place in Townsville
on Wednesday of Mrs. Agnes
Fitzalan, at the age of 74 years,
which breaks another link with the
early history of Bowen. The deceased
was the widow of the late Herbert
Fitzalan, who was a son of Eugene
Fitzalan, one of the original pioneers
of Bowen. He was a botanist
and a poet of no mean standing, who
contributed many effusions to the
“Port Denison Times." His '.‘Look-
Ahead,’’ predicting great progress for
Bowen was first published In the local
newspaper of 10th August 1872. De
ceased was a daughter of Nurse
Hughes, well known to all early
settlers. She was highly skilled in
the use of plants for medical
purposes and her famous ointment for
healing long standing sores is still on
sale locally. Deceased could tell
many interesting stories of the early settlers
and their difficulties. The
late Mr. and Mrs. Fitzalan had followed
agricultural pursuits until Mr. Fitzalan
died a number of years ago,
his widow remaining in residence on
the Don River until the time of her
death. She leaves one son, Eustace
Alblni, her-other son, Herbert, having
died some years ago in Brisbane. The
deceased was brought from Townsville
last night, - the funeral leaving
the Holy Trinity - Church at -10 a,m.
the Rev. F.W. Palmer performing the
last sad rites at the graveside.
