THE RAILWAY FATALITY AT HASTINGS. A magisterial enquiry, concerning the death of Henry Waldeneer Peddle, who was killed by a train at No. 49 level crossing on Wednesday week, was held at Hoban's Royal Hotel on Friday week. Cora Estello Peddle, who was with deceased at the time of the accident, deposed that they did not see the train till it was right on them. They never beard the whistle till the collision. As she jumped the engine almost touched her. She got up, after the train had stopped, ran to her brother, and saw that he was dead. DriverHancy saidhe left Hastings on time and blew the whistle on thetop of the rise, above the gatehunse, and, as a high wind was blowing, he repeated it. On nearing the crossnag, the fireman called out " Red light." He at once opened the whistle, shot off steam, and put down the brakes as the engine struck the vehicle. The horse's head and part of his shoulder were across the rails. He saw Miss Peddle jump and fall on the horse's side, and scramble clear on her hands and knees. He thought her legs were cut off and turned away his head. He saw the body of deceased fly through the air and fall clear of the metal. When the train stopped he ran back, ex amined Peddle, and saw that he was quite dead. Firemtn Babbage said that on near ing the crossing, and when about 40 or 50yds away, Ithe saw the vehicle ap proaching between the gatehouse and rails, and called out " Red light." He put on the hand brake and the driver blew the whistle, put down the brake, and shut off steam. As the train closed on the vehicle, Miss Peddle turned her face toward the engine, and he saw her speak to her brother and clasp his arm. Then she jumped out. Deceased stood up and pulled the reins jest as the train swept over him. Thought if he had whipped the horse and not pulled the reins he could have cleared the rails in time. Guard Veal was in the body of the van, writing, when he heard the whistle blow, and, as the Westinghouse brake brought the train to a standstill, he sow fragments of the vehicle strewn along the line. He ran back and examined deceased, and saw that he was dead. H. Stockton said that deceased and his sister passed him on the road, but he kept them In view till the house hid them from his sight. lie heart the train whistle four times, and, as the horse was trotting tiup thy crossing, he know they would be caught. He hurriot after them, but did not get close enough for them to hear. He, conveyed the boly back to the Royal Hotel, to await the enquiry. O,nstable Watt eaid that he had. examined thebo body of deceased, and found that the skull was fractured, and that there was a small deep wound at the iack of the heed as if a part of the b:roken vehie:e had been driven into it.
