MRS. ISABELLA PRATT. Whilst ' busily knitting socks for soldiers abroad on the' veranda of her home, in Juliet-street, yesterday afternoon, Mrs. David Pratt, one of the most widely respected Identities of the Mackay district over very many years, suddenly put her knitting down in her lap and passed away peacefully. News of the death of this grand old lady, wife of Mr. David Pratt, shocked the community, for it was utterly unexpected. Only that afternoon Mrs. Pratt had seemed in the most robust Health and had sent for more wool to continue her patriotic work. Mrs. Pratt would have been 84 years of age in July. A little over three years ago Mr. and Mrs. Pratt celebrated their Diamond Wedding at the residence of the Hamilton family, "Iolanthe," James-street. Tho gathering on thnt occasion was notable by the fact that four gener ations of the Pratt family, number ing 45, were present and a very large assemblage of representative citizens. It was an outstanding landmark, not only in the lives of the aged couple themselves, but also in the wide spread interest that Mackay and dis trict had in the event. The late Mrs. Pratt leaves a hus band, two sons and five daughters. The eldest son, William, died at Kolijo a few years ago, and another, David, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. The other members of the family are: Mr. F. D. Pratt, of Kolijo, and Mr. D. Pratt, of Baker's Creek. The daughters are: Mrs. C. P. Mau, Mrs. H. G. Johansen and Mrs. H. Petersen, of Rosella; Mrs. P. Rob ertson, of George-street, Mackay; Mrs. K. Sprogoe, of the Chalet, Eungella. The deceased lady, although not enjoying the best of health for some time past, was not really ill. She was sitting on her veranda knitting, and suddenly was attacked by a seizure about 2 o'clock. Medical assistance was summoned, but life was extinct. Only a brief period previously Mrs. Pratt conversed with a friend, whom she told she was quite well, and requested her girl to bring more wool. In the present as in tho last war, Mrs. Pratt did an immense amount of knitting for the soldiers. Married in Scotland on September 30, 1877, with her husband she reached Mackay by the sailing ship Hannah Landells In September 58 years ago. On this vessel also came the late Mr. R. Hamilton, and the families have been close friends over the intervening years. The late Mrs. Pratt's life was marked by a spirit' of active charity and loyalty, and many acts of kind ness had been unostentatiously done. Like her husband, the late Mrs. Pratt was held in the highest esteem by ail who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The couple became engaged in dairying near the Town Common early after their arrival and by Industry went on to success. Her kindly disposition endeared her to all associated with her. but she was one who was always closely attached to her home and family. |
