HILLCOAT.-On February 17, at " Ormah," Sydney, John William Hillcoat, second son of the late Rev. H. Brougham W. Hillcoat, D.D., incumbent of St. Matthew's, Scotland- road, Liverpool, and chaplain to the Duke at Sussex, aged 78 years. Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette 21 Feb 1907 Mr. John William Hillcoat who was associated with Gympie mining in the very early days. He arrived on the field during the latter part of 1868, and after following mining for some time he undertook the management of Threlkeld's crushing mill which was erected on Pumpkin Flat. This was eventually removed to Black Snake, and Mr. Hillcoat, retaining the managership, moved to that mining centre. After some years he relinquished mining pursuits to take up a selection at Wolvi, but about 22 years ago he left the district and made Sydney his home. He had attained the ripe, age of 76 years. He appears to have enjoyed good health up to about three weeks ago, when he visited Katoomba and whilst there was seized with an illness which terminated fatally. His son Mr. Reginald Hillcoat grazier of the Gulf, North Queensland, and his daughter Mrs. Ross were with him at the last. The deceased gentleman leaves five sons and three daughters, the members of the family in this district being Messrs. Henry and John Hillcoat. |
