In 1843 she was tried for having stolen clothing (one cotton gown, two chemises an apron and a skirt) and pawning the items. Although she was lent Two Shillings by the pawnbroker, Rose was convicted and sentenced to transportation for seven years to Van Diemen's Land. Rose Arrived in Hobart on the convict ship TASMANIA on the 20th of December 1844. On the 6th of April 1846 she married Francis Heritage who had been sentenced to seven years for robbery. Their first three children were born in Tasmania. Six more were born after Rose and Francis arrived in Victoria where they eventually settled on a farm at Mia Mia, near Newstead. The children were Mary Ann (born 1847); Frank (1848); John Charles (1850); William Henry (1852); Maria (1854); Walter (1856); George (1858); Alfred (1860) and James (1862). After Francis's death in 1875, Rose moved to Essendon where several of her children were living. She died in March 1912 at the age of 93 and is buried in Fawkner Cemetery. She is remembered as a very kind woman, known for her vast knowlege about plants and herbs and for her skill in midwifery. |
