Daily Mercury (Mackay) 15 Jan 1947
Vale Thomas L. Hoey
(By JAMES PERRY)
Another link in the chain of our pioneers was broken on Friday, January 10. when Mr. Thomas L. Hoey, of Shakespeare and Milton streets, passed away. The de- ceased was born in Mackay and would have been 79 years old in February next. He lived his whole life in Mackay and district, was well and favourably known in the business world, and was a good citizen, who helped in many ways to make Mackay one of the most beautiful cities In Queensland. . He was the son of a true-blue pioneer who was amongst the first settlers in the district.
Mr. Hoey, Sen,, worked with a surveyor, Mr. Fitzgerald, when he surveyed the town of Mackay and a route for a telegraph line from Broadsound, via Collaroy, Nebo, Greenmount, to Bowen, with a branch line from Greenmount to Mackay.
Mr. Hoey, Sen., also was the licensee of a hotel called the Hibernian, which was situated on the Nebo-road near where the Caledonian Hotel is now. During this time his brother, Mr. Thomas Hoey, was in the Shamrock Hotel. The parents of deceased selected land on the North Coast on St. Helens Creek and he lived there for a few years. He became a good horseman, and did a lot of stock work on St. Helens cattle station when Dyson Lacy owned that property. Later he ran the mail from The Leap to Bowen. After leaving this job deceased worked for a time at the North Eton mill. In 1910 he married Miss Maria O'Toole, of Carlyle- street, Mackay. Later he took over the Shamrock Hotel, which he conducted for about five years. He sold out and bought the Commercial Hotel from Mr. W. Swayne. After conducting that for some years he sold out and retired to the cottage at the corner of Milton and Shakespeare streets.
Deceased was a good sportsman in his young days. He was very fond of racing and when he got up in years took on bowling. He was a life member of the Mac kay Bowling Club, a keen player, and when in health never missed a playing afternoon. He was of a kindly and generous nature and well thought of by all who knew him. This was proved by the representative gathering at the graveside. He leaves a widow and two daughters, be sides a host of friends.
