An Index to Freeholders’ Registers of County Tipperary 1775-76
Prepared by Terry Eakin
In the eighteenth century the qualification for voting at elections in counties in Ireland was the forty shilling freehold. This meant property worth forty shillings above the rent and was either owned outright or leased on certain conditions. Leases for lives (usually three) lasting during the lives of named individuals, qualified as freeholds for voting purposes. Catholics could not vote at elections between 1728 and 1793, nor could anyone married to a Catholic, and it was not until 1829 that Catholics were allowed to sit in Parliament. This regulation was strictly enforced. From 1728 voters in Ireland had to conform to an increasingly strict system of registration. Some counties, such as counties Armagh and Down, have significant numbers of registers giving the names and addresses of freeholders and the locations of the freeholds that entitled them to vote, however many counties have only one or two registers (or transcripts of the originals) which survive.

Hi, I am looking for my ggggreat grandfather Robert or it could be Daniel Wellwood. He was born approx. in the mid 1700s. He and his family came to Ontario, Canada around 1830. I have found a brother-in-law, William Hobbs, from Borrisokane, Tipperary who settled in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada. His notes state that Robert Wellwood resided at Borrisokane and was known by a Captain Towers also of Borrisokane.
(Is this a possible brother to My James (1798 - 1855)?)

I have a William Hobbs born 1782, who emigrates to Quebec. I am not certain of the year. However, in the bytown.com site, I find a Wm. Hobbs who in 1820 asks for assistance (Ireland) to send for brother-in-law Robert Wellwood in Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland.
Wm. Hobbs belongs to the Hobbs I am researching. The above is telling me that one of his sister's must have married Robert Wellwood. Would I ever be interested in who that might be. Do you have any idea?
Of the Hobbs family Wm. represents as a sibling, I only have three children. Wm. Hobbs b.1782, Robert Hobbs b. 1790 and Margaret Hobbs born 1810. Margaret married an Armstrong, so I know she wouldn't be Robert's wife.
Also interesting that somewhere in my 4 to 5 years of research I came across a "Little" Family in the central provinces where the branches of Robert Hobbs traveled. Some of the Hobbss moved on down to the USA, into Minnesota and North Dakota, and then into Montana, where I come into the picture eventually. I would love to know the connections to the Little's.
(Are these the siblings of James (1798 - 1855)
According to our family history, our ancestors were born in County Tipperary
but left to come to Canada about 1816 to 1818 based on the birth dates of
various children. In fact there are as many as five Hobbs families in the
area who have no idea as to any common ancestors in Ireland or before. All
arrived about the same time and settled in the same area.
Does anybody have any leads for me?
William Hobbs born abt 1872 in Ireland and married Mary ? who was born abt
1874. They were buried in a Church of England cemetery.

Children born in Ireland were:
James 1807 (married Mary Evoy in Canada)
Daniel 1810
Jane 1813
Ann 1815

Children born in Canada were:
William 1819 who married Bridgit Tracey born in Ireland in 1826 (Patrick
Tracey and Katherine McDonald)
Ruth 1820
Maria 1826
Thanks for any help. Jim Hobbs

Where, in Canada, are your Hobbs' located?
There are about 20 Hobbs' in my data base, but the most closely related is
Mary Elizabeth HOBBS, 7 Jul 1865. She married William Edward McCUTCHEON, b.
25 Aug 1869 in W. Nissouri Twp., Middlesex Co. William and Mary were married
6 Jun 1894 and lived in Thorndale, ON, for 65 years until Mary died 18 May

This may or may not be a late Christmas present. The McCabe List from 1829
(I'll explain what that is after I give the Hobbs information) includes a
William Hobbs, from the parish and town of Borrisokane in County Tipperary.
William was applying on behalf of his brother-in-law, Robert Wellwood, having
a family who resides in Borrisokane and is known to Captn. Towers of Said
Place.
The McCabe list is named after the genealogist who found the list in the
English Public Record Office. It was a petition as of Feb 1829 by residents
in the Bytown area (now known as Ottawa), listing families members still in
Ireland who would come to Canada if they received government assistance.
They generally named a gentleman of respectability who could vouch for the
family, in the Hobbs case it was Captain Towers. You didn't mention where
your Hobbs family lived but if they were in the Ottawa area, this may very
well be them.
Since your family is Protestant, you might want to try a book written about
the early settlement in Ontario by northern TIpperary Protestant families.
They began arrriving in 1818 and settled in the Carp Valley in western
Carleton. I cannot remember the name of the book but I am sure that someone
out there on the list knows it. If no one comes up with it, let me know and
I'll track it down. We may have a copy in the Iowa Genealogical Society's
library. I'll check.
