This may or may not be a late Christmas present. The McCabe List from 1829 (I'll explain what that is after I give the Hobbs information) includes a William Hobbs, from the parish and town of Borrisokane in County Tipperary. William was applying on behalf of his brother-in-law, Robert Wellwood, having a family who resides in Borrisokane and is known to Captn. Towers of Said Place. The McCabe list is named after the genealogist who found the list in the English Public Record Office. It was a petition as of Feb 1829 by residents in the Bytown area (now known as Ottawa), listing families members still in Ireland who would come to Canada if they received government assistance. They generally named a gentleman of respectability who could vouch for the family, in the Hobbs case it was Captain Towers. You didn't mention where your Hobbs family lived but if they were in the Ottawa area, this may very well be them. Since your family is Protestant, you might want to try a book written about the early settlement in Ontario by northern TIpperary Protestant families. (The book is "Irish Migrants in the Canadas - A New Approach" by Bruce S Elliot, McGill-Queens University Press 1988. Dr Robert Hobbs formerly of Borrisokane, and William Hobbs named in the Birch Petition, are mentioned.) They began arrriving in 1818 and settled in the Carp Valley in western Carleton. I cannot remember the name of the book but I am sure that someone out there on the list knows it. If no one comes up with it, let me know and I'll track it down. (Different spelling for males and females) There is a tree on Ancestry for William and Alicia. William's death reg gives father Benjamin and mother Anna. The tree had parents of Alicia as George Leidwill and Jane Oway.
