Lang and Co., 88, Collins street The Herald Melbourne) 21 May 1861 Messes. G. Scott and Co.'s Estate— A meeting of the creditors of Messrs.. Geo., Scott; and Co. took place yesterday afternoon, at the Duke of Rothsay Hotel, Elizabeth street. A proposal direct from Messrs. M..Lang and Co. to pay 9s 6d in the pound was discussed, but the general feeling was evidently in flavour of a higher composition. After a lengthy disputa- it was determined to refer the offer to the trustees. The Age (Melbourne) 21 May 1861 A meeting of the creditors in Messrs Scott and Co.'s estate was held to-day, at the Duke of Rothsay Hotel, to con sider an offer made by Messrs M. Lang and Co., wine and spirit merchants, Collins street, for the purchase of the estate.. After some discussion a great many creditors being in favor of accepting Messrs Lang's offer, — it was resolved to leave the matter entirely in the hands of the trustees for them to act as they deemed best. Subsequent to the meeting, however, we are informed that Messrs Lang purchased the estate for 9s 6d in the pound, they also agreeing to pay law costs. In the Count Court to-day before His Honor Judge Cope, an action of Lang v. Lawrence was heard in which Messrs Matthew Lang and Alexander Scott, of Collins- street went, trading as M. Lang and Co, wine and spirit merchants sued Captain Charles Lawrence, of the ship Thyatirs, for 105 damages, for loss of and damage to quantities of brandy and beer, shipped in London on board the Thyatira, and consigned to the plaintiffs. The brandy and beer were consigned to Lang and Co. by Mesers Gilbert J. McCaul and Co., and upon their arrival here it was found that during the voyages holes had been made in some of the casks and hogsheads and from 10 to 14 gallons of brandy and from 30 to 45 gallons of beer taken from the vessels, the holes being filled with spiles of soft wood such as brewers or distillers never use for the purpose. ….. A large sale of wines took place on Monday, at the Goonawarra vineyard, the property of the late Mr. J. G. Francis. Goonawarra is situated on the banks of Jackson's Creek, at Sunbury and comprises some 46 acres of vines of various kinds. The late Mr. Francis paid great atten tion for a number of years to wine producing and the accommodation at his vineyard com prised all the latest improvements in the requisites for the business, which has for some time past been in charge of Mr, Harling, who gained his experience in one of the wine making districts of France, from whence he was brought specially to superintend the business at Goonawarra. The first lot submitted was 200 gallons of hock, described as extra fine old strong bouquet. It was well matured, being of 1875 vintage. Messrs. M. Lang and Co. secured the lot at 4s. per gallon. M. Lang and Co. secured 1500 gallons of 1879 Hock at 3s. 7d. to 3s. 9d.; Goona Warra Vineyard is a winery, wedding and event venue in Goona Warra, just outside of Sunbury, Victoria. News has been received of the death on Sunday at his residence, Auburn, near Melbourne, of Mr. P. G. Dixon, so well known in sporting circles. He will be best remembered as the owner of the- celebrated trotting horse Wanderer. For many years Mr. Dixon successfully conducted a large business as a manufacturer of aerated waters. This was subsequently floated into a limited liability Company. Mr. Dixon has enjoyed the quietude of his charming country, residence at Auburn, where he was highly respected by a large circle of friends. Few men in Melbourne are better known than the deceased-gentleman. W. Beauchamp, the jockey who was so severely injured in a hurdle race at the opening of the spring meeting of the S.A.J.C., died at the Adelaide Hospital on Monday afternoon. Matthew Lang, of Market-street, Melbourne, wine and spirit merchant, by his will dated April 3, 1878, and presented for probate by Mr. A. H. Manton, of Melbourne, solicitor, appointed his son. Matthew (since deceased), James and Alexander Scott, and his wife Jane. Lang, executors. He bequeathed to his wife .£200; to each of his brothers John and William, £100; to Jessie, wife of James Scott, of Echuca, teacher, £100; to his brother-in-law, Alexander Scott (then in his employ), .£200; to each of his children, .£200; sons at 21 and daughters at that age or marriage. He also bequeathed to his wife all his household furniture and effects and the income of the residue of his estate. Should she marry again, he bequeathed to her one-fourth of the said income. Upon her death he bequeathed the whole of the said income, or upon her remarriage, the three-fourths, to his children equally. After, the death of his wife, and upon his youngest child attaining the age of 21, he bequeathed his residuary estate to his children equally. The company owned Mount Wood Station, near Tibooburra in New South Wales. Mount Wood Station was first taken up in 1883 by George Dorward and later the homestead and woolscour were built in 1897. Proprietors of the station were Moore, Dorward & Co (1893 - 1897); Moore, Dorward and Palmer (1905 - 1907) and later Mount Wood Pastoral Co Pty Ltd (1908 - 1973). Its Managing Director included Ian McLachlan (1950s - 1973). Mount Wood Station was incorporated into Sturt National Park after 1972. The company was deregistered on 16 January 1987. Barrier Mininer (Broken Hill 29 Sept 1913 Frank Little said he was a station manager, residing at Mount Wood; he had been manager of Mount Wood and Whittabritnah for four years; he had been previously employed as overseer on the same property for 10 year; Mount Wood adjoined Connulpie, with a border line of about 40 miles; he em- ployed two doggers regularly, and paid them 15/ per scalp, independent of the 5/ paid by the board ; they worked prin cipally on the Connulpie boundary, as that was where the dogs came from; he estimated that the Mount Wood Pastoral Company had lost 2000 sheep during the last 12 months by the rav- ages of wild dogs. Many of the pastoral companies and squatters held over a million acres each, and were not properly using the land. The Bootra Pastoral Company was running only one sheep to every 65 acres. The Morden Pas toral Company was running one sheep to every 47 acres, and Mount Wood Pastoral Company was holding down half a million acres with not one head of live stock on It. Mr. Lang contrasted the Mount Wood Pastoral Co. Pty., Ltd., holding 467,000 acres on which there was not one head of stock, with the N.Z. and Aust. L.
