Death of Mr. Robert R.
Hungerford.
One of Maitland's earliest pioneers and most re-
respected inhabitants passed away yesterday in the
person of Mr. Robert Hungerford, who died at his
residence, Bush Villa, near Owlpen, not far from
Maitland. Mr. Hungerford was about 80 years of
age, over half a century of which was passed in the
Maitland district. For about eight or ten years he
had been suffering from a painful disease, and
though his end was anticipated at no distant date
his death yesterday was somewhat sudden.
His two daughters, Miss Hungerford and Miss
Helena Hungerford, were unremitting in their at
tentions upon their aged father, who in the latter
stages of his illness was attended by Dr. Pentland.
Mr. Hungerford bore his sickness with great
patience and fortitude, and was very attentive to
religious ministrations. The Rev. Henry Yarring
ton was a frequent visitor to him, and attended the
sufferer so late as Tuesday evening.
The deceased was a son of the late Captain
Emanuel Hungerford, the original proprietor of
Farley Estate, and was a brother of Mrs. Chapman,
wife of the late Rev. Robert Chapman, for over
30 years incumbent of St. Mary's parish,
West Maitland. He was also brother of the
Rev. Septimus Hungerford, of Sydney; of
Mr. Thomas Hungerford, ex-M.L.A.; and of Mr.
Percy Hungerford, of Farley. Mr. Hungerford
married Miss Ellen Winder, belonging to one of
the eldest and most respected families of the dis
trict. He leaves a grown-up family of sons and
daughters. One daughter was the wife of the Ven.
Archdeacon Tyrrell, of East Maitland; and another
was married to Mr. Charles Simpson, of Goulburn
Grove, Denman.
The late Mr. Hungerford was a man much above
the average, a great reader and a deep thinker.
Throughout his long residence in this district he
ever had the esteem and respect of a large circle of
acquaintances and friends, by whom his death
is sincerely regretted. The funeral leaves his late
residence to-morrow morning at nine o'clock.
