Personal Notes:
The family had barely settled into their new life in the colony when little Alice, only eight years and two months, died on 14 Jan 1854 - just five months after arrival in Australia. Before civil registration of deaths began, only burial certificates were issued and these do not show a cause of death.
Alice had been baptised at St Martins on 04 Nov 1845 and family legend says mother Emma had a nervous breakdown after the birth. It would have taken some time for the unhappy news to reach Emma in Exeter that her baby daughter had died so soon and so far away. Perhaps the sadness hastened Emma's own death just six months later.

The lovely little church of St Martin was originally consecrated on 06 July 1065, although parts have been rebuilt. It faces into the grassy Cathedral Close at the bottom of St Martin Lane - next to Mol's Coffee House and quite close to the Ship Inn, a favourite drinking spot of Sir Francis Drake and his friends.
Maybe it was in tiny St Martin that the mariners offered their prayers before setting off on their voyages of discovery or to battle with the Spaniards.
The font where Isabella, Charles and Alice were baptised is situated in an alcove beneath a multi-paned plain glass window. The spelling on some of the memorial plaques seems very odd to modem minds ...
"To the pyous and loved memory of Mrs Judeath Wakeman, widdow, daughter of Mr Thomas Spicer, somtymes Alderman of this citty who lyes buryed in his tombe and died the 5th January 1643."
"This is my Dwelling, this is my trewest home,
A house ofclay best fits aguest of lome.
Nay, tis my house for I perceave I have
In all my life byn walking to this grave. "
