Personal Notes: |
George and Emma had probably moved into the dwelling part of the business premises at 37 High Street, close to the church of St Stephen, as Eliza Grace was baptised there in 1839. The plain and sparsely furnished church's length is parallel to the street. Nowadays it appears to be used as a meeting place for youth groups. There were a couple of foul-mouthed nasty 10 year old future delinquents actually riding bicycles in the church hall when I was there.
Eliza Grace, the second daughter of George and Emma Elworthy was born on 26 June 1839 at Exeter and baptised at St Stephens. That was the year the first bicycle was built, Samuel Cunard founded a shipping line and George Cadbury, later renowned for his chocolate, was born. The passenger list of the Mooltan on which Eliza came to Australia showed her as a milliner, even though she was only 14! When she married John Edmund HOLLOWAY, son of Martha nee SEARLE and John Holloway, she was almost 20. Seven years older than his bride, John had been in Australia about three years, coming originally from Whittlesea in Cambridgeshire. On 23 ApI 1859, they were wed at Christ Church St Lawrence Sydney, at the southern end of George Street near the present Railway Square. The marriage document describes John as a draper of Surry Hills; in later years he was a warehouseman. The maiden name of John's mother was given to their first child - Edmund Searle but sadly he only lived for three months after his birth on 20 Jan 1860 at Riley Street, Surry Hills. Between 1860 and 1881, the Holloways had 14 children but a girl and three boys died in infancy or early childhood. Helen, twin of John, may have died at birth as there are no further details on her, although her birth in 1868 was registered. Other offspring who did not survive were George Elworthy born 1870 died Mar 1872; Grace born ApI 1873, died 06 May 1873 and Harold Septimus Pierce born 1877 died 1885. As his name implied, he was the seventh son. Details on death certificates are sometimes unreliable as the information is given by another person whose knowledge of birth dates, maiden names, and so on is often based on hearsay - and sometimes are only guesstimates. As a small example, Eliza's death certificate shows her age as 85 and states she had been living for 66 years in New South Wales. She was actually 83 when she died on 15 Oct 1922 at 25 Heeley Street, Paddington. Born in Exeter, Devon on 26 June 1839, Eliza had lived 69 years in NSW, arriving in 1853. In this particular case the differences were insignificant but death details always need to be looked at with caution. Eliza was interred on 17 Oct 1922 in the Anglican section of Rookwood Cemetery. |
