Personal Notes: |
Of Thorverton?, Devon
1841 census has an Elizabeth Bowcher (69) at Fore Street with Edward Bowcher (34) spirit dealer, William (27) Tailor, James Elworthy (8) and Mary Elworthy (55). Guessing that James (8) is James Baker Elworthy (1833-1889); Mary Elworthy might be a sibling of James Elworthy (1770-1883) Source References 3. Abbr: Source #3 Notes: Book containing transcript of parish register. States that marriage was witnessed by Richard Bowcher [John's brother] and William Townsend [Elizabeth's father]. Also says 'John Bowcher of St Stephens, Exeter'. 18. Abbr: 1851 England Census 125. Abbr: Death certificate Comments Given name = Elizabeth Family name = Townsend John was a spirit dealer in 1823. - Notes: At Upton Pyne, a few miles from Exeter, Elizabeth 01 Jul 1772 wed Richard's
brother, John Bowcher Second on 15 Sep 1805. The widowed John was ten years older than Elizabeth. They were an interesting couple and direct ancestors of many who will be reading this book. Sisters marrying brothers was not unusual and details of these four are given in the section relative to the Bowcher Family. The Townsend family was long established, well-known and respected in the areas of Shillingford, Exminster, Alphington, Kenton, Newton St Cyres, Upton Pyne and Thorverton where they were yeoman farmers with both freehold and leasehold lands. At the time of Elizabeth's marriage in 1805, her brother Thomas was farming 'Stevenstone Barton' on the boundary of Thorverton and Upton Pyne. From the road I saw this farmhouse when I was in that area in 1990. At the junction of the farm's drive and the road is the remnant of an ancient tree, variously said to be a 900 year old oak and a 200 year old yew! It was not hard to conjure up a picture of Elizabeth in an elegant carriage driving past on the way to her marriage in the nearby parish church. An event of great significance to this family took place at Upton Pyne on 15 Sep 1805 when widowed John Second married Elizabeth Townsend, younger sister of Deborah?, wife of Richard Bowcher. The sisters appeared to be capable business women. After Richard's death Deborah? took over ownership of his lands, then when John died Elizabeth efficiently ran his business. |

- Notes: An astute businesswoman, Elizabeth Bowcher, mother of these seven children,
obviously learned the finer points of the wine and spirit trade from her husband as she stepped into John Second's shoes right after his death. The Exeter Flying Post of 28 Feb 1828 carried his death notice ... 'Saturday last, after a long illness borne with patient resignation to the Divine Will, Mr John Bowcher, spirit merchant, High Street, aged 66, much respected by his large family, numerous friends and acquaintances.' The next week another notice appeared in the Post stating Mrs Bowcher would be carrying on her late husband's business of John Bowcher, Wine & Spirit Merchant, 71 High Street - for the benefit of herself and her numerous family. She thanked friends and the public for past support and most respectfully solicited a continuation of their favour. She also asked that debtors pay monies to her and that creditors send accounts for examination and discharge. Numbering of Exeter's High Street goes down one side and up the other, contrary to the way we number buildings, but I had no trouble finding the three-storey brick and stone Bowcher premises. On street level, No 71 is now a modern shoe shop but upstairs the stonework is blackened with age and the lovely old 24-panel mullioned bay windows, two on each of the upper floors look to be original. White-painted No 72 next door has been modernised and shows no sign of its wine and spirit days. |
