Aged 47 years
Son of William and Sarah Married The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser (NSW : 1868 - 1931) Tue 20 Oct 1908 MR. ANDREW PATON KILLED. CRUSHED BY A FALL FROM A HORSE. That well-known Tarcutta resident, Mr. Andrew Paton, met with a very serious accident on Thursday night. He attended the L.V. races at Gundagai, and after tea started for home. He had ridden to town, but on the journey home he entered Mr. W. H. Sibthorpe's sulky, and led his mare. At South Gundagai the mare pulled away, and Mr. Paton decided to ride. Thereupon Mr. Sibthorpe drove on. Near Mr. E. Jamieson's there is a white patch of road, near an embankment, just off the road. The mare is rather flighty, but possessed of only one eye, and suddenly coming upon the embankment she made a spring and fell, rolling upon her rider, who lay out in the road all night in terrible pain. At 8 a.m. on Friday he was picked up by Prowse's van and taken to Sibthorpe's hotel. He was dazed, but it was not thought he was seriously injured, and it was not discovered until a couple of hours later that he was paralysed. He was received into the Hospital on Friday evening, and was found to be in a very serious condition, his lower extremities being paralysed as a result of severe injuries to the spinal column, and no hope was held out for his recovery. The patient lingered until Sunday morning, when death put an end to his sufferings. There was absolutely no hope for him from the start. After admission to the Hospital he was able to give an account of the accident, and made his will. Numerous relatives came to town and evinced deep concern, over the sad happening, his family being deeply grieved when death occurred. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. Harrington, the cortege leaving Gundagai yesterday morning, the remains being interred in the Mundarlo cemetery during the afternoon. The deceased was aged 47, and leaves a wife and nine children. He owned a property of 2200 acres at Tarcutta. |
