Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 1 Oct 1935
OBITUARY MRS. MARTHA SPICER. By the death of Mrs. Martha Spicer wife of Mr. John Spicer, of West Blowering, there passed beyond the Vale a devoted wife and a mother of 12 children three sons and nine daughters, the youngest of whom is a toddler), her demise taking place in the Tumut District Hospital on Sunday last, at the age of 46 years. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Woodbridge, of Tarcutta, and was married at Wagga to Mr. John Spicer, who originally hailed from Monaro, 28 years ago. After a residence at Tumbarumba of 15 years they came to Tumut to live, and eventually settled down at West Blowering where Mr. Spicer engaged in market gardening on a plot of rich river flat belonging to the Bourke Estate. Some weeks ago Mrs. Spicer, until then a fine robust, healthy woman, was seized with pneumonia and later kidney complications set in. All that medical skill and careful nursing could do was exercised to retain the vital spark, but in vain. There is left a sorrowing husband and the family comprised of Alfred John, George Robert. Kenneth Ar thur, Jean Evelyn Alice (Mrs. Rolf Eggleton, W. Blowering,) Irene Hannah (Mrs. J. Hendricks, Tumut); Rebecca Mary, Margaret Dorothy, Thelma May, Gwendoline Agneta, Joan and Lella (W. Blowering). Besides these there are two brothers (Arthur and John) surviving. One sister, Selina (Mrs. Jas. Byrne, West Wyalong, who died 12 months ago) and one brother, Alfred, predeceased her. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the mortal remains being laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, Very Rev Dean J. Sharkey officiating at graveside, whilst Messrs Fuller & Sons carried out the funeral arrangements. The pall bearers were Messrs. Jas. Byrne (brother-in-law), Jn. Henricks, Rolf Eggleton (sons-inlaw), D. J. Stanfield, Arthur Lindbeck and Wm. Denning.
