Death of Mr. Richard Beck.
Mr. Richard Beck, whose death took place yesterday at his home in Darlington, had reached the age of 111 years. Mr Beck settled in Sydney after struggling ashore from the wreck of the sailing ship Catherine Adamson near Inner North Head on October 23, 1857, dragging the ship's boy into the boat, in which he fought a way to safety.

This dramatic arrival was Mr. Beck's third visit to Australia. Born in Devonshire, he went to sea at a very early age, and served before the mast in the stirring days when clipper ships raced along the trade routes. He had made two trips to Sydney, and later had such strong desire to return that he "worked his passage" out at a shilling a week. After arrival he found employment on the railway line from Sydney to Parramatta, but, tiring of this unexciting life, he joined in the rush for gold to Kiandra, and later to Adelong.

Eventually Mr. Beck took up land in the Adelong district, where he spent most of his remaining days. Fourteen years ago he joined his son, Mr Edward Beck, at Tumut. He came to Sydney only two months before his death. He was a vigorous, powerful man. Mrs. Beck died many years ago. Their eldest surviving son is Mr. Thomas Beck, of Sydney. Two other sons are Messrs. E. Beck and R. Beck. Mrs. A. Paterson, of Batlow, is a daughter.

The funeral will take place this morning at the Rookwood Cemetery.
