Personal Notes:
MR. ROBERT EMBLEM
Widespread regret was expressed among all. sections of the community of Wagga and district when it was learned that Mr. Robert Emblem, former town clerk of Wagga, had died at his residence, 62 Best-street, Wagga, early on Saturday morning, after a short illness, at the age of. 68 years.

After a period of service of 42 years with the Wagga Council, over 37 of which he occupied the position of Town Clerk, Mr. Emblem retired on December 14 last to enjoy the evening of his life quietly at his home in Best-street. He appeared to be in fairly good health until about a fortnight ago, when he became ill. His condition, although causing concern to his relatives and friends, was not regarded as very serious, but on Friday night he became worse, and he died quietly in his sleep on Saturday morning. His passing will be regretted by all citizens of Wagga.

His unfailing courtesy to all with whom he came in contact, and his quiet and unobtrusive acts of kindness, will ever be remembered by the citizens of Wagga. He was a genial painstaking, and efficient public spirited officer.

Mr. Emblem was born at Wagga, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Emblem, who came from England, He was educated at the Gurwood-street public school, and was a keen scholar, achieving the distinction of being made dux of the school.

He afterwards studied extensively at his home and passed several local government examinations. His studies were later to stand him in good stead during his service with the council, and it was said of him that there were few men in the State who were more familiar with local government administration than lie. He started his service with the council in March 1892, and his resignation dated from December 14 last. He had more than 42 years of unbroken service with the council.

He was the first Wagga native to occupy the position of town clerk. He had lived in Wagga all his life with the exception, of about two years, during which he served with the Railway Department at Nevertire. The Wagga Town Hall was filled on the night of January 11 last, when of Wagga paid tribute to the long a gathering of representative citizens and faithful service rendered to the town by Mr. Emblem, who was presented with a wallet of notes and a gold watch, recognition of his 42 years' service with the Municipal Council.

- Notes: Several council clerks or borough managers quickly succeeded F. A. Tompson until Robert Emblen (1867-1935) was appointed in 1897 after several years as assistant. He was born in Wagga Wagga but spent some years with his family in Young before returning to be a Council officer in the early 1890s. Then he was Town Clerk until 1934, combining with his administrative tasks the duties of municipal engineer for more than twenty years. In many ways an unobtrusive man, he enjoyed great local respect; in fact, the 1914 statement 'he is at all times one of the most courteous of town clerks, whose sole endeavour is to assist and freely give his best efforts to one and all was an accurate assessment of his whole career.
