Personal Notes: |
William Bridle was at Somersetshire. England in 1797 and arrived in Australia as a convict. He arrived at Port Jackson aboard the ship " Larkins " on the 22nd November 1817. The ship had sailed from Portsmouth in England on the 20th July 1817, a voyage of 125 days. He had been convicted of larceny and sentenced to 7 years transportation to the colony. Following his arrival, William was assigned to James Meehan, Surveyor, at Macquarie Fields. He was granted his Certificate of Freedom on the 19th February 1824.
He married Martha Miles 30 Jun 1823 in St. Peter's Church of England, Campbelltown NSW. Martha Miles, was born at Prospect 4 February 1807 and baptised at St. Lukes’s C. of E. Liverpool in 1812. Some publications claim William Bridle was one of a party who accompanied Governor Macquarie across the Blue Mountains and for doing this was given a grant of land near Liverpool. As William arrived in the colony several years after the first crossing of the Blue Mountains this claim can’t be correct. In 1842 the Bridle family moved to the Monaro and took up a grazing licence for "Island Laked. In 1848 William Bridle’s son, William Bridle, moved across the mountains and secured the “Talbmgo” run for his father. The family then followed, hauling their possessions in a dray. It is claimed that William Bridle was the first person to descend Talbingo mountain with a bullock dray. There was no road and to enable him to take the dray around the sides of steep spurs when he was blocked on the ridges, he carried a spare knave (hub) of a wheel which he fitted to the uphill side in place of a wheel. |
