William Soper was born near Bamarang in NSW in 1845. Bamarang is only about 6 kms upriver (as the crow flies) from Nowra - on the southern side of the Shoalhaven. Today the settled area along the river is only a narrow strip. William was one of the sons washed away in the February 1852 flood and saved by floating on a table with a mattress for floatation. The next month the family re-located to the foot of Cambewarra Mountain - at a property they called "Cedar Grove".
He married Serina Lewrey at Kangaroo Valley in 1877 and they had fifteen children. The first nine were born around that area - from 1878 to 1888. At first they lived at "Beaumont" and then at one or two other properties they had at Brogher's Creek just east of Kangaroo Valley. The Brogers Creek is a tributary of the Kangaroo River - towards Berry (the Berry Mountain Road/Wattamolla Road follows its course). They then moved to a property just before the ascent of Cambewarra Mountain on the southern side where they had a further six children. The only reminder of the family at this property is a well that was behind their house. In later years, William bought a property known as "Vyner Home" from Henry Head - comprising a hotel, store and fine home. They lived there until it was demolished in 1916. He retired to Arncliffe - in Sydney - where he died in 1922. A visitor to the Anglican portion of the West Cambewarra Cemetery will see many Soper graves. Other family connections include: Hill, Abernethy, Monahan, Mullins, Armstrong and Milne. |
