Personal Notes:
Cecelia Large whose birthday was 02 Oct 1848, was named for the vessel on which the family sailed from Melbourne. Her wedding on 18 Jun 1872 to John JENKINS of Buckingbong Station, Narandera ended quite tragically when he died on 19 September, only a few months later. John was a nephew of John Jenkins of Nangus Station, Gundagai.
The Wagga Daily Advertiser reported John was suffering from fever but against advice went to the races where he caught cold, became alarming ill and expired soon afterwards at the home of his father-in-law, Dr Large.
The Race Ball was a focal point on the country town's calendar so the esteem in which John was held can be gauged by a later paragraph in the Wagga paper. "It is only natural that this sorrowful contretemps should have the effect of lessening the attendance at the Race Ball last night; for the deceased was well-known and exceptionally popular in Wagga and throughout the neighbourhood; his family being the oldest on the river." A large body of horsemen and pedestrians as well as 26 carriages formed the funeral cortege.
Poor Cecelia was already pregnant and a daughter Frances Jenkins was born in 1873 but wasn't quite 18 when she died at Cootamundra on 30 Nov 1890.
Six years after John's death, Cecelia remarried on 17 ApI 1878 at Wagga. Her second husband was New Zealand born John Thomas WILLIAMSON, son of Han John Williamson, Superintendent of the Province of Auckland before the days of Governors. But tragedy seemed to follow Cecelia and she was widowed a second time - John was only 55 when he was accidentally killed.
