Personal Notes:
At Tumut on 03 Sep 1861, William and Mary Ann's eldest daughter Maria Elizabeth married Charles Frederick SMITH born 10 Nov 1834 at Wollongong, eldest son of Charles Throsby Smith and Sarah nee BROUGHTON. As a free settler C.T Smith first came to Australia in 1816 and about 1823 took up land in Wollongong which he called Bustle Farm. This is now the central business district of Wollongong. He donated land for an Anglican Cathedral and the site where the
Technical College now stands.
The marriage announcement in the Yass 'Courier' mentioned that Maria was niece of Arthur Nicholas Wrixon, Esq, Judge of County Courts, Melbourne.
Over the next 18 years they had three daughters and eight sons: Mary Ann (Minnie) 1862 m 16 ApI 1890 James Broughton of Gadara; Charles Frederick 1863, born at Tumut but killed by
lightning on 25 Oct 1874 and buried at Wollongong; Godfrey William probably called by his second name 1865 m Mary CAROLAN 1886; Philip Thomas 1866 m Martha DITTON and died in 1956; Archer Broughton 1868 m Augusta ROBERTS 1890; Ernest 31 May 1870; Arthur Wrixon 1873; Mabel Edith 1874 m Sidney McCAULEY 1897; Clarence Hamilton 1876; Fanny Clayton 1878 m Rowland NICHOLLS 1898; Frederick 1879. These names and dates were obtained from
N.5.W Registrar-General's records but there are several discrepancies compared to the pre-1900 Illawarra Pioneers Register. Offsprings' ages given on the mother's death certificate also differ slightly.
The Smiths stayed at Tumut for some time as the eldest sons were born there. Later they lived at 'Bustle Cottage' on Smith's Hill at Wollongong. Charles was an auctioneer and ran the Savings Bank of NSW agency for 35 years; was also District Returning Officer and Coroner. The Pioneer's Register says "He was an adventurer until the age of 22 when he took up a grant of 300 acres in Wollongong and became Crown Land Agent. He was member of the Illawarra District Council when a municipality."
On 27 July 1899, in her early 60s, Maria died at Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown from carcinoma of the pylorus and peritonitis. Apart from Charles, all her children were living. She may have been staying with one of her sons who lived nearby at 67 Albany Road in Petersham. Aged 81, Charles died on 21 Oct 1915 at Keira St, Wollongong and is buried there in the old C of E Cemetery where Maria also rests.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
