Sydney Morning Herald 30 Mar 1885
THE FRIENDS of the late Mr. CORNELIUS O'CONNOR are invited to attend his Funeral, THIS (Mon- day) AFTERNOON ; to move from Sydney Hospital, at 2 o'clock, for Necropolis. WALTER STEWART, Undertaker, Bathurst- street.

There were 10 children of the marriage. But by 1885, 3 males and 4 females (including Kate and Mary Ann) were dead.

Sailed from Plymouth in 1852 on the "Kate'. Arrived in Sydney on 16-10-1852 having paid ₤1-10-0 for their passage. Plymouth (3rd Jul 1852) to Sydney (16th Oct 1852).

Almost certainly fleeing Ireland after the great potato famine (1845-1850+). It may also account for the possible infant deaths possibly in Ireland.

The parish register of Kanturk shows a thriving community with an average of 5-6 marriages per week and about as many children christened each week - in the years immediately after their marriage. Then in 1845, the numbers marrying and eing christened plummets. Disaster.

Corneilius could read and write. He had been foreman of the saltworks in Kanturk (which may explain how they survived the famine.) He worked as a wharehouseman in Australia.

Sands Sydney & NSW directory gives the following info (This directory was first published 1858-9, not all years recorded).
1861 - C O'Connor, paddington st, Paddington
1863 - O,Connor Cornelius, landholder, 58 Judge St (west side between Wooloomooloo Lane and William St)
1864 - O'Connor Cornelius, 580 Crown St (east side near Clevland St). The usual place of address given by Honora on her marriage cert (Dec 1864) is given as Crown St.
1865 - O'Connor Cornelius, 612 Crown St. (The relation of the cross streets indicates that this is most likely a renumbering of the street. Vacant land and buildings was common.)
1866 - no record
1867 - O'Connor Cornelius 612 Crown St (east side near Clevland St)
1868 - O'Connor Cornelius 612 Crown St
1868-1871 - O'Connor Cornelius, dairyman, 619 Bourke Street (This was between Surry St and Victoria St, possibly on the corner with Victoria)
1873 - O'Connor Cornelius, dairyman, 617 & 619 Bourke Street
1875-6 no record
1877 - O'Connor Cornelius, 617 & 619 Bourke Street
1879 - O'Connor Cornelius, 617 & 619 Bourke Street
1880 - O'Connor Cornelius, Dairy, 36 Davies St (this is off Bourke St). Still listed at 619 Bourke St as well.
1882 - 617 Bourke t - Borne Alfred (journalist) & Charity (plumber)
1882 - O'Connor C - dairyman 26 Davies St
1883 - O'Connor Cornelius, dairyman, 123 Bourke ST, East Redfern
1884 - O'Connor MC, dairyman, 123 Bourke ST, Redfern
1885 - O'Connor M Cornelius, dairyman, 123 Bourke ST, Redfern
Cornelius died 1885
1886 - 123 Bourke St - Henry Lee.
{There is only one Cornelius O'Connor listed for this period so I assume that they moved in the general area. My interpretation is that 617 & 619 Bourke St was at or near the corner of Bourke and davies street - now Surry Hills - which adjoins Redfern.} Helen Bell
619 Bourke St Surry Hills was also the suburb quoted on the birth cert of Mary Noraah Elizabeth Maitland Cairney on 26 March 1878.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
