Personal Notes: |
Edward Malone was born in County Clare Ireland. There he married Mary Halloran, a sister to Francis Halloran, Thomas Halloran, and Patrick Halloran. Their first son Michael Mallone was born in Ireland in 1849.
The famine years in Ireland resulting from the failure of the potato crops caused Edward Malone to migrate to Australia with his wife and infant son. Arriving in Sydney in 1850, they immediately set out for Tumut by bullock dray and on foot. For a period they obtained employment at Jugiong where a son John Malone and a daughter Bridget Malone were born. When she grew to womanhood Bridget Malone married Michael McInerney of Tumut Plains. The disastrous flood of 1852 in the Murrumbidgee caused Edward Malone to move with his family to Tumut where they arrived on horseback, carrying their worldly possessions. Edward Malone had saved enough money to purchase the farm at Tumut Plains from the Shelley Estate. This farm is still owned by the Malone family. The recent owner, Francis Malone was born there and worked the farm until his death in August 1965. He was a grandson of Edward Malone. Edward Malone and his wife worked hard to improve the farm. The family had increased to six boys and one girl. On 19 August 1860, only eight years after settling on the farm, Edward Malone was drowned whilst riding his horse across the flooded river as he returned from the township. The remains of Edward Malone were found on the 14th instant close to the town, entangled amidst roots and trees in the river. He was a popular man, respected and loved by all who knew him. Mrs. Malone was left to battle with her children, the eldest boy being eleven years old and the youngest an infant 18 months old. Edward Malone was an excellent citizen and thrifty man. At the time of his death he had not only completed payments of hisfarm but he had also purchased another farm at Lacmalac. He was 41 when he died. Edward Malone, Francis Malone and Timothy Malone married and settled on farms on Tumut Plains. They reared large families and many of their descendants are still in the district and others are spread throughout the State. The whole family made a magnificent contribution to early settlement especially to agriculture and dairying. Michael Malone and John Malone engaged in gold mining at Lacmalac. At one period Michael Malone conducted a butchering business and also held the licence for the Horse and Jockey Hotel. Timothy Malone was a member of the Tumut Turf Club and an active committeeman for a number of years. He bred and raced some well-performed racehorses. He died on 13 July 1949 at the age of 89 years. His wife Bridget Malone died on 23 September 1943 aged 76. |
