The Tumut and Adelong Times 13 Jun 1939
OBITUARY MRS. LIZABETH GROVES At the residence of Mrs. C. V. Leslie (her daughter), 38 Coogee-st., Randwick, the death is reported of another Tumut old dentity, in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth Groves, widow of the late Mr. Spencer Groves, at the ripe old age of 82 years. Her illness was of short duration, ensuing on really very good health for one of her years, and within a few days, despite the efforts of two trained nurses and of her medical adviser, the passing took place on Friday morning last. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Howard. She was born at Tumut, and lived here to within 14 years ago. Her husband, who was the editor-proprietor of the TUMUT TIMES and ADELONG ARGUS as far back as 1876, predecased her in 1923. Her only brother, the late Mr. W. H. Howard, passed away exactly five weeks ago, and the sole remain ing member of that family now is Mrs. J. T. Hill ,of Adelong, over 80 years of age. Other sisters were Mrs. A. E. Eggins and Mrs. W. J. Taylor. At an early age Miss Howard mar ried the late Spencer Groves, then proprietor of the TUMUT TIMES and ADELONG ARGUS newspapers, which upon his retirement in 1922 were leased to Mr. E. M. Howard, his nephew, and in 1925 acquired by Mr. A. Wilkie Watson, the papers being then merged, the "Tumut Advocate" with the TUMUT TIMES and !the "Adelong Argus" with the ADELONG and TUMUT EXPRESS. After winding up her husband's estate, which included considerable town property, Mrs. Groves left Tumut in 1925 and since then has lived with the different members of her family for varying periods. The surviving family consists of eight daughters, who reside in Sydney and suburbs, viz: Mrs. Jas. Beuzeville (Eva), Mrs. A. R. Norris (Ella), Mrs. F. W. Arthur (Ruby), Mrs. E. J.Kehoe (Linda) Mrs. C. V Leslie (Daisy), Mrs. W. C. Ritchie (Vera), Miss Daphne and Mrs. L. R. N. Beattie (Rita). One daughter (Hessie) died in infancy. The late Mrs. Groves was a devout member of All Saints' Church, taking part in the numerous annual functions of the younger people as well as parishioners, and was held in the highest esteem in the community in which she lived so long. The sympathy of the people of Tumut and district goes out to the bereaved. |

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources. g.bell@bigpond.net.au When you click the mail address abouve, if it does not open your email app, copy the address on the screen.
