Personal Notes: |
The youngest child of James and Grace Elworthy was EMMA, 15 Feb 1818 who was married at St Sidwell on 20 Jan 1838 to an accountant, Thomas Land SMALE, with her sister Jane and uncle Henry Leigh Elworthy as witnesses. Thomas' father had also been an innkeeper and would have known Emma's father James.
Emma and Thomas had one son Henry Charles Elworthy Smale born in 1843, who only lived for three months. He died at home in Longbrook Street and was buried at St Sidwell. The street was so named because the ormans crossed the ford in the 'Long Brook' to besiege Exeter. While in Exeter I walked down this street going to the West Country Research Library each day! I wish I had known then perhaps their house still survives. |
