Personal Notes:
At Topsham (called Topsum) near Exeter on 08 Sep 1826, HENRY LEIGH baptised 27 Dec 1802 in Crediton, married Ann BAKER 1805, daughter of Francis and Ann nee APLIN of St Sidwell. Not much is known about Henry and Ann's three girls and five boys.
The eldest son Francis Henry Elworthy, 02 Jan 1827 at St Sidwell is said to have corne to Australia with his Uncle George and family - more details are in a later chapter.
Henry and Ann's eldest daughter Thirza Ann, 21 Oct 1828 at St Lawrence, Exeter married William John MORGAN on 26 Oct 1848 at All Hallows on the Wall; only a baptismal date of 10 June 1830 has been found for the third child, Henry George.
It was probably about this time that Henry Senior took over the Country House Inn in Catherine Street, Exeter - quite near St Peter's Cathedral, as his fourth child Sarah 30 Jan 1832 was baptised there but died at the hotel premises some time prior to 1841.
The next five children were all baptised at the Cathedral and dates were taken from the IGI but not much is known about them - Charles Leigh 19 Mar 1833 (died Oct 1834); Grace Leigh 05 Dec 1834 wed John Pinn MORGAN at Exminster on 29 ApI 1859; Reuben 14 Feb 1837 and Jessie 16 Feb 1839. Hubert was born 1840 and died at Catherine Street in 1844. The last two were born after Civil Registration began so details were taken from the 1841 Census.
The Country House Inn came complete with a brewhouse and cellars, stables, back court, malthouse, etc. The owner of the premises was Amelia Baker, probably a relative of Henry's wife.
In 1841 Thirza and Grace were at school in Tiverton. The following year their father Henry died on 3 Sep 1842 (not quite 40) and Ann carried on the business. In the 1851 Census she was still a widow and Reuben was the only family member living at home. Ann gave up her widowhood on 24 Feb 1862 when she married widower James CLARK, a surveyor of Walsall, Staffordshire.

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
