Two years younger than her brother George, Jane was the second-last child of Grace and James Elworthy, baptised at St Sidwell, Exeter on 25 Jun 1815. She also was the last of the family to marry. Just three weeks after the marriage of her sister Emma, Jane wed John SPEED-ANDREWS at Exeter on 14 Feb 1838. Six weeks later a group of Lutheran missionaries arrived at Moreton Bay in what was to become the state of Queensland - very important to some of Jane's descendants.
George's sister JANE Elworthy was baptised 25 June 1815, just one week after the Battle of Waterloo. On 14 Feb 1838 in her baptismal church of St Sidwell, she wed John Speed ANDREWS of Castle Carey in Somerset. He was the son of Elizabeth nee DURNFORD and John Speed Andrews whose name eventually came to be hyphenated as Speed-Andrews. John Senior was a purser in the Royal Navy and later mine host of the Brittania Inn at Castle Carey near Wincanton. Later John Junior also ran the "Brittania". John and Jane had six and possibly seven sons. The eldest John Speed Andrews ill, baptised Wincanton in 1840 was another of the family who served in the Royal Navy. He died at his father's home in Tottenham on 25 Nov 1884, aged 44 years but whether he was married and had a family, I have not discovered. Little is known about the other sons - Harry 1845, Thomas Alexander 1847, Alfred 13 Nov 1854 to 19 Jan 1940 and Charles Septimus 1856. Septimus means 'the seventh', so maybe one child did not survive. Details of William 1850, another who if came Down Under, are given later. |
