George William Sturt who was a relative of Captain Charles Sturt, came from England with Frederick Wheeler Vyner. In 1839 George William Sturt settled on a property at Tumut Plains called "Elderfield”. He married on 27 February 1840, Anne Bolton who came from Ireland.
In 1840 George William Sturt and his wife Anne settled on their property at Tumut Plains, called "Elderfield". Later George William Sturt acquired another property at Tumut Plains which he named "Richlands". This property remained in the Sturt family for 123 years until it was acquired in 1964 by the Snowy Mountains Authority. |

| - Notes: George was born on the Isle of Man and baptized at Aston Le Walls Northamptonshire.
He is the son of Rev. George William Morduant Sturt and Maria Louisa Yselle. George a 1st. Cousin to Captain Charles Napier Sturt the explorer came to Australia in 1833 at the age of 30, his occupation a mariner. Both he and his future wife Ann an Irish emigrant were residents of St. Philips Parish Sydney and were married in St.Philips Church, York St. Sydney on the 27th Feb 1840. It was shortly after their marriage that they moved to the Tumut district where in partnership with Richard Cooper they purchased 84 acres from the Rose estate at Tumut Plains. They named their property "Elderfield." It was on the Tumut Plains they would grow their family having 3 sons and 3 daughters.
